About this project
During my senior year at Cornell, I took a product design course offered by AppDev, an engineering project team that builds mobile and web apps for the Cornell community. Over a semester, each student was tasked to design a feature for their favorite app. I chose to develop a feature for Strava, a social fitness platform for tracking athletic performance.

To identify pain points and hone my focus, I conducted user interviews with Strava users to understand the underlying motivations that entice users to record their activities on Strava.

Core Findings
Users were motivated to level up their fitness
Power-users are Runners
People want to share their activities
People weren't consistent in recording all activities

Problem Statement
As a runner, I want to improve my performance to achieve my fitness goals, but I can't do that well because...
1. I don't know what fitness benchmarks to set
2. It's difficult to hold myself accountable

Potential Solutions
I got together with a product strategist and brainstormed solutions; here are a few of our favorites:
A monthly leaderboard for your followers
Curated goals based on previous activity
Invite only competitions/clubs
Group chats for goals with likeminded people
Community Forums for improving performance

After looking at the production flow of Strava, I played around with the information architecture.

I outlined the IA and navigation of Strava to get a bird's eye view of the app.
The entry point for Curated Goals on the "You" page felt logical because information tailored towards individual users' is housed on the profile page. From this entry point, I created a flow and designed medium-fidelity wireframes for each screen:
Profile Page
Goals Home
My Goals
Increase Distance
Goal Details
I also took time to mock up some explorations of key screens, specifically the goals home page and the targeted goals page. Overall, weighing tradeoffs with these explorations allowed me to develop the final solution with more data points.

Technical
Determine whether there are any constraints with the entry point being on the profile page
Determine whether it's possible/allowed to pull data from a user's previous activities
Future State
Implementing gamification through a badge or awards system
Designing screens for compatible wearables
The ability for users to provide feedback on whether Curated Goals help improve performance

Next Steps (User Testing + Handoff)
Arrange user testing sessions with key stakeholders; we could conduct asynchronous user testing through Lookback.io
Iterate the final designs and handoff to Eng once aligned with PM
Once the MVP is shipped, we could conduct A/B testing with different experiences
Final Thoughts + Take Aways
Designing Curated Goals also allowed me to think about Strava's business needs. Curated goals could be an incentive to convert users to their paid subscription and increase session numbers while gamifying the Strava experience.
Overall, I made sure to design the solution to accomplish the goal but otherwise stay out of the way of the app’s primary purpose: recording activities. I hope Curated Goals can inspire users to improve their fitness performance and motivate them to stay active.
